As they hatch and grow the surrounding lichen covered ground resonates with the ear piercing calls of fluffy dark grey owlets scattering far and wide. Quite a challenge to look after them all! An adult snowy owl may eat as many as 1600 lemmings a year, and so is an important factor in rodent control in these cold conditions. When lemmings and other small mammals are scarce they become quite nomadic, and may move south in search of other food sources. Over 30 years ago snowy owls were recorded breeding off the northern islands of Scotland, but the last record was in 1975. Irregular sightings of Snowy owls in the UK occur from time to time - the question arises as to whether or not these are escapees from domestic aviaries. |
