Enjoy our 'green breaks' in an important conservation area - SSSI, Environmentally Sensitive Area, Conservation Area, National Trust and National Park

One of the most amazing areas for wildlife in the UK. Combine that with endless walking, through a diversity of habitats, and the area is a MUST VISIT for anyone interested in conservation and wildlife.

Please take a little time out to enjoy the videos we have added here for your enjoyment. This is a selection we have found on Youtube, compiled by other visitors to the area, who have enjoyed their visits. Most visitors and locals are very passionate about the Exmoor area, and enjoy sharing this with our new visitors.

West Lynch Farm is situated within the Porlock Vale, part of the Holnicote Estate, owned by the National Trust, within Exmoor National Park. The farm itself is a really important farmstead historically, with some amazing architectural features dating back some 600 years, boasting the tallest chimney in the Vale! The land is an SSSI, a conservation area, designated as an Environmentally Sensitive Area, is a Grade II Listed farmstead, and is teeming in wildlife! Close to us the ancient woodland of Horner is home to all the 17 species of Bat, bar one; the moors are roamed by the rare Exmoor ponies, by Red, Roe and Fallow deer, otter.... and not forgetting the Exmoor Beast.....and the skies provide freedom for the 5 species of British Owl and 8 species of bird of prey - hobby, merlin, peregrine, sparrowhawk, eurasian buzzard, red kite, kestrel, and hen harrier, and the seas are refuge to seal, whale, sharks and numerous other marine life. On the salt marshes of Porlock Bay you can enjoy the plaintive cries of the numerous curlew, watch little egrets dabbling in the marsh, oystercatchers, shelduck and numerous other birds, with occasionally the rare visiting osprey ..... look out for nuthatches, treecreepers in the woods, dippers and kingfishers in the rivers, and flycatchers through the trees.

Conservation and the sustainable economy is of paramount importance to all of us that live and work within this very special area, and we feel privileged that we are able to share it with our visitors. Our lives are relatively simple, and superbly enriched. We hope you enjoy your time here with us.

All of the following pictures were taken by ourselves within a few miles of our farm, and many within walking distance. We look forward to meeting you here so you can experience the special qualities of Exmoor for yourself.

GETTING AROUND WITHIN THE NATIONAL PARK - The popular Moor Rover demand responsive bus service is now in service year round.

The Moor Rover is available for places within Exmoor National Park not covered by a public bus service, helping people to enjoy the area whether for walking, cycling or any other leisure activity.

Dan James, Sustainable Economy Officer at Exmoor National Park said: “We’re really pleased that ATWEST has chosen to extend this popular service into the winter season. Exmoor has so much to do and see throughout the year and extending the seasonal offer is one way of helping to build our economy whilst minimising the impact on this special place. We would encourage local businesses to ensure their guests know about the service. The service is great for one way linear walks and for accessing more remote areas of the National Park.”

The Moor Rover minibuses can carry bikes, wheelchairs and dogs and can even be used to transport luggage while people enjoy a walk.

The buses can pick up and drop people off at any pre-arranged point within Exmoor National Park (contact ATWEST to discuss journeys outside this area including along the Coleridge Way). The buses have 8-16 seats and all are fully accessible with drivers trained in passenger care and wheelchair loading.

The service runs between 8.00am and 8.00pm and all journeys must be pre-booked at least the day before travel is required. The booking line (01643 709701) is currently open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm. There is no booking line on a Saturday or Sunday.

Brian Worrall from ATWEST said: “People should call and arrange their pick-up time and place, and drop-off point, with the scheduler, and also arrange the return journey if needed.

“We ask that you are in good time to be picked up for an outward journey, and if possible have a mobile phone with you to let the driver know if you will be late at the pick-up point for a return journey. Drivers will normally only wait 10 minutes unless advised otherwise.”

Fares are a flat rate for a single journey of £6 per person, children £2 (children up to 16 must be accompanied by an adult), group of 4 or more £4 per person, dogs and bikes £1, luggage transfer (while you walk) £6. Concessionary fares are not applicable on Moor Rover.
